The Universal Account Number is given to every EPF account holder. It is unique for every EPF account holder and can be used throughout India. This is a one-time process.

What is UAN?
UAN (Universal Account Number) is a unique 12-digit number allotted by EPFO to all the employees who are contributing to EPF. This is a universal number.
The number allotted to the employee remains the same throughout his/her life, even with the change of the job. It means the same number will work on every job.
When you switch your job, just give your UAN number to your new employer so that they can connect your new PF account to it.
Because of the UAN number, now you can easily transfer your EPF balance in case of the job change. However, this Universal Account Number is useful only after the activation.
How to know your UAN number?
You can easily get your UAN number from your employer. You can also check your salary slip for knowing your UAN as most of the employers provide this number on the salary slips of their employees.
Benefits of UAN activation
Now, all the services of EPFO have been linked to the UAN. You can avail these services only once Universal Account Number is activated. Here are some of the benefits of Universal Account Number.
1. You can access the dashboard of the EPF member portal.
2. You can download and print your UAN card.
3. You can download your EPF member passbook.
4. You will receive SMS from EPFO about your monthly EPF contribution.
5. You can use SMS and missed call facility to know your EPF balance.
6. You can update your KYC details.
7. You can withdraw EPF online without an employer signature.
8. You can view your claim status online.
9. You can change your contact details.
10. You can transfer your PF from one account to another.

UAN Activation Process | How to activate UAN number?
To activate it, you can use two different methods:
1. Activate through UAN Member Portal
2. Activate through SMS
UAN Activation process through EPF Member Portal
UAN activation through the EPF member website is the best method. Here is the step by step process for this using unified member website:
1. Visit the UAN member portal – https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
2. Click on the “Activate UAN” tab under “Important Links” on the right-hand side of the page.
3. Here, you will be redirected to a new page where you will see a detailed online form. You need to fill all the mandatory details that are marked with red asterisk (*).
4. Now, click on the “Get Authorization Pin” button.
5. You will receive a four-digit PIN on your mobile number.
6. Enter this PIN and click on the “Validate OTP and Activate UAN” tab.
7. On the next page, you can generate your password for EPF member portal to complete the registration process. You has to create your password while activating your UAN. Your password should be alphanumeric and have minimum 1 special character. The password should be 8-25 character long. Password should be like this: abc@1973. This password used to login to the EPF member website.
8. Now the process is complete.
UAN Activation through SMS
You can also activate your Universal Account Number through SMS. However, this process only works for those employees whose mobile numbers registered with EPFO. The employees should also know their PF number. To activate via an SMS, just type the following SMS and send it to 7738299899
EPFOHO ACT,<<12 Digit UAN number>>,<<22 Digit Member Id>>
Just send it to 7738299899 and your Universal Account Number will be activated by EPFO. Please note that with this SMS based process, you will not be able to use EPFO online services as online services require login at the unified member portal.
