What is EPF Nomination?
The EPF nomination is a process of appointing an individual(s) as a nominee to receive your PF corpus in the event of your death. Your PF account must have a nominee.
You can nominate more than one nominee in your EPF account. You can also fix the percentage of EPF money among all such nominees. However, the total percentage should be 100.
Why do you need a nominee in your EPF account?
It is always important to nominate someone (normally the family members) in your EPF account. Then only the nominee can withdraw your EPF corpus in the event of your death. If there is no nomination in your PF account then your family members might face difficulties in claiming your EPF savings.
What are the EPF Nomination rules?
Here are some rules of nomination in your EPF account.
1. Your PF account must have a nominee to receive the fund in case of your sudden demise.
2. You can declare more than one nominee and also fix the proportion of funds among all such nominees.
3. According to EPFO rules, if you have a family, you can only nominate someone from your family.
4. Nomination made before the marriage would be invalid. You need to update your nomination, post your marriage.
5. If you don’t have a family, then you can nominate any other person. However, this will become invalid once you have a family.
6. If you are nominating a minor, the guardian should be the family member. If there is no major family member to become a guardian, then the guardian can be anyone.
7. In the event of the death of an EPF member, the fund would be paid to the nominee(s).
8. In case there is no nominee in your EPF account, the PF savings would be equally distributed among the family members.
9. You can change your nomination as per your wish using the online facility.
Whom can you nominate in your EPF account?
As per EPFO rules, only defined family members can be nominated as a nominee(s) in your EPF account.
1. A married male member can nominate his wife, children (whether married or unmarried), dependant parents and his deceased son’s widow & children.
2. A married female member can nominate her husband, children (whether married or unmarried), dependant parents, her husband’s dependent parents, and her deceased son’s widow & children.
3. A member with no family can nominate any person related to him or not. However, this will become invalid once the member has a family.
What is E-nomination facility of the EPFO?
EPFO has now introduced an online e-nomination facility on its official portal (https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in) for EPF nominee update online login. Now you can submit/update your PF nomination online using EPFO’s website. This online EPF nomination service is known as e-nomination facility.
The e-nomination facility is faster and it also removes intervention of employer in EPF nomination. Now the onus of submitting / updating the nominee details in your PF account lies on you. Currently, it is optional to submit your PF nomination.
Note that filing of online pension claim at the required time is also dependent on the nomination in your PF account. If the e-nomination has been done then your nominee can file an online claim in the event of your sudden demise.
What are the perquisites for EPF nominee add online?
Here are certain perquisites that must be met to avail e-nomination facility.
1. You must have an active UAN (Universal Account Number) to avail online e-nomination facility.
2. Make sure that your UAN is linked with your Aadhaar and verified on the EPF portal. You can check this using the member sewa portal of EPFO.
3. Your Aadhaar should be linked with your mobile number to receive OTPs.
4. You also have to upload your recent photograph on the unified member portal. Upload your recent photograph by using the “Profile” section under the “View” tab. First, click on preview tab and next click on the upload photograph option. It will upload your photograph on the member sewa portal. Go to the ‘View’ tab and click on ‘Profile’ button to upload your photograph if not done already.
5. You also need to provide your address and mobile number on the unified member portal. View your personal details on the member sewa portal by using the “Profile” option under the “View” tab. You can add nomination online in PF account by fulfilling the above perquisites.
How to add nominee name in PF account online?
Follow the following steps to make the e-nomination in your EPF account.
1. Visit the EPFO portal (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in) to add nomination online in PF account.
2. Login by using your UAN number, password and captcha.
3. A pop-up will appear on the screen about the e-nomination facility.
Alternatively, you can add or change nomination by clicking on “Manage” tab and then click on “E-nomination” option.
4. It will take you to your profile page. Here, your details like your UAN number, name, date of birth, gender, father’s / husband’s name, date of joining EPF scheme, etc., are displayed. You need to update your current and permanent address here. Click on “Save” button.
5. Now, it will ask you, “Having Family?”. Select “Yes” to update family details. Here, you need to provide the following details.
- Aadhaar number
- Name
- Date of birth
- Gender
- Relation
- Address
- Bank Account Details (Optional)
- Guardian (if a family member is a minor)
- Photograph.
Note that you can nominate more than one nominee in your EPF account by clicking on the “Add row” option. Just add new rows to add all family members.
6. If you don’t have a family then select “No”. Here, you need to provide the above details of the person you are nominating.
7. Here, click on the “Save Family Details” button.
8. Next, select the family member(s) you wish to nominate in your PF account. You also need to fix the percentage of shares you wish to give to them. If you are nominating more than one family member in your EPF account, then the total for all nominees should add to 100 percent.
9. Here, click on the “Save EPF Nomination” button. The details of EPF nomination will be saved successfully.
EPS Nomination
Once you complete your EPF nomination, the system may ask for the EPS nomination. And, you need to enter similar details as above to make EPS (Employees’ Pension Scheme) nomination. Note that you can add different nomination for EPF and EPS.
EPF Nomination – Aadhaar-based e-sign
10. Once EPF and EPS nomination is completed, you need to “e-sign” to complete the e-nomination process. Remember, Aadhaar Virtual ID (VID) is mandatory for e-signature.
11. Click on the “e-sign” option. A new page will open on the screen.
12. Enter your Aadhaar Virtual ID (VID). Click on the checkbox. Click on the “Verify” button.
13. Here once again you have to click on the checkbox to give your consent for using the e-KYC services from Aadhaar.
14. Next, you have to enter your Virtual ID or Aadhaar number once again. Click on the “Get OTP” tab. You will receive the OTP on your registered mobile number that is linked to your Aadhaar.
15. Now enter the OTP received on your mobile number. Click the checkbox to provide your consent. Click on the “Submit” tab.
16. Once done. Your PF nomination document will be signed successfully. Your EPF nomination details will be saved into the EPFO database. Using the above process, you can add nomination online in PF account. This is how to add e nomination in EPF.
How to check PF Nomination details online?
Follow the following steps to can check the EPF Nomination details online. The process is very easy.
1. Visit the EPFO website (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in) to check PF nomination online.
2. Login by using your UAN number, password and captcha.
3. Select the “E-Nomination” option under “Manage” tab.
4. Once you click on the “E-Nomination” option, then you will find the nominee details linked to your PF account.
